Hello, Friends, I will be updating my Art of Schmidt web site every week with new images of my art work which is available for sale on Etsy. I’ve been looking at my postings and realizing that many of the paintings I have posted on this site have already sold, and therefore do not represent the variety of items that I now have for sale on my commerce sites, Etsy, and Red Bubble. Here are some new acrylic paintings which are now available for sale on my Etsy web site. My art work is also available on my Red Bubble site as mugs, art prints, iPhone cases and more! Here is a link to the Red Bubble web site: https://www.redbubble.com/people/jsjschmidt2017?ref=account-nav-dropdown&asc=u.
Here is a new acrylic painting I just completed this week of a koi pond with water lilies. It is based on photos that I took of a nearby water lily pond center called Lilly Pons in Adamstown, MD which sells koi fish and water gardens. The center has an extensive water garden on site with various types of waterlilies and koi fish. Since I love the color, this subject seemed like the perfect choice! The painting is now for sale on my Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/ArtofSchmidt.
This week I am continuing my journey which started with a three value sketch and followed up with some colored sketches with watercolor and Caran Ache wax pastels. Yesterday I began painting the acrylic paintings based on the color sketches. It has been a rocky start and my inner critic has been relentless with negative chatter. Today I am trying to emotionally distance myself from the paintings and ask them what they need from me. Do they need more light, more color, to take something or add something to make them feel complete? This project is showing me how insidious my inner critique can be and how to practice self-compassion so that I don’t sabotage the artwork
. Here are my progress paintings. I will post additional photos later when I have made more changes to the work. These paintings will be on display this October at the Frederick Coffee Company in Frederick, MD as Artist of the month. The theme for the art show will be Autumn and all works will be for sale!

I am working on a new painting, To Catch a Thief, Re-imagined. This piece is acrylic on Ampersand board and is based on the Alfred Hitchcock movie, To Catch a Thief. I wanted to capture the feeling of movement and speed, so I blurred the paint strokes in the front to make the car seem like it is in motion. And I wanted to capture that vintage, the 1950s vibe, so I went wild with a bright color scheme of blue, blue-green, red, pink, and blue-violet. Stay tuned and I will let you know what happens with my entry. If accepted into the art show at the Artists’ Angle Gallery in Frederick, MD, I will be sure to post the details about the time/place that the show takes place.
I am a little behind this week with blogging, but today I am taking the time to catch up. Last week I talked about my artistic process and how I created a sketchbook of inspiring artwork and used an older sketch from a previous art project that never got off the ground, unfortunately. I also talked about how I collaged all my favorite ideas from my sketchbook to make a digital collage in Photoshop.
Today I chose one of the digital collages and started a three value sketch. Here is my work in progress. My next step will be to gesso my canvas with two coats of gesso. When that dries, I will transfer this sketch and begin the acrylic painting. I have two weeks to paint it before it will be dropped off for display in the Box Show at the Artists’ Gallery in Frederick, MD, so I really have to get cracking! Just a quick note to let you know my artwork will be on display at Spin the Bottle Wine Company in Frederick, MD until the end of February. I will have original art, and art prints for sale. Attached is a post card about my art show.
