Hello Friends,

The big news here at Art of Schmidt (that’s me!), is that I have a new art exhibit displayed at Bollinger’s Restaurant in Thurmont, MD. My oil paintings of still life and landscape will be up for the month of December. All items are for sale and have been custom framed, so they are ready to hang on your wall! I took some pictures of the exhibit with my phone, but they did not turn out as well as I would have liked, so I am also posting some photos I took of these paintings with my camera before I set up the art show. The restaurant is located at 210 North Church Street, Thurmont, MD 21788 and Bollinger’s is open Monday through Saturday 6 am-8 pm, except for Sundays when the hours are 7 am- 2pm. Work in Progress: Frederick Coffee Company Art Show

Hello Friends,

Here are some progress photos of the small landscape paintings I have been working on in preparation for my art show at Frederick Coffee Company in Frederick, MD in October 2017. These paintings started out as acrylics, but I was unhappy with the result, so I painted over the acrylic with Winsor and Newton oil paints yesterday. Now I am much happier with the more vibrant colors that I achieved this second time around. I used some paint chips from Lowes paint center to help me decide what color scheme to use for these paintings and I tried to match the colors as closely as I could to the paint chip samples. It was a big help so that I didn’t get sucked into the photo references I used and was able to make these paintings my own. Thanks for stopping by!

Small Works in Progress

This week I am continuing my journey which started with a three value sketch and followed up with some colored sketches with watercolor and Caran Ache wax pastels. Yesterday I began painting the acrylic paintings based on the color sketches. It has been a rocky start and my inner critic has been relentless with negative chatter. Today I am trying to emotionally distance myself from the paintings and ask them what they need from me. Do they need more light, more color, to take something or add something to make them feel complete? This project is showing me how insidious my inner critique can be and how to practice self-compassion so that I don’t sabotage the artwork

. Here are my progress paintings. I will post additional photos later when I have made more changes to the work. These paintings will be on display this October at the Frederick Coffee Company in Frederick, MD as Artist of the month. The theme for the art show will be Autumn and all works will be for sale!

Behind the Scenes, Project Completed

So here I am at the end of a blog series with my 10 x 10-inch painting completed and ready to be displayed at the TAG Squared Box Show in Frederick, MD. It has been a difficult but insightful experience, mustering up the discipline to finish a project when I had little enthusiasm and was suffering from a severe case of artist’s block. So what did I learn in the process?

I learned that there is value in daily studio practice of drawing or painting, even when I don’t feel that spark of inspiration. It is all preparation and practice, polishing up my skills so that when the next flight of inspiration comes, I will be strong in my painting and drawing skills. I also learned that sometimes I have to “look” for that inspiration with a very focused approach, and for me, that was creating a sketchbook of ideas from Google searches, art magazines and especially the well-known idea catalog, Pinterest.  Lastly, I learned that my desire to paint and draw comes from seeing the artwork of others and by pushing myself to do frequent studio practice because it reminds me of why I love to create art. For me, it is the process of making something new, the challenge of translating an abstract idea, such as imagination, into a unnamed-1visual language that gives art meaning. And most importantly, making art is my way of recharging my batteries and stepping back from the busyness and ongoing responsibilities of this life and just be.

My work on this project is done. Next month my piece, There is no Frigate Like a Book, will be on display at The Artists’ Gallery in Frederick, MD for the TAG Squared show. Many other local artists will be participating in the show as well and I look forward to seeing their creations on their 10 x 10-inch birch panels. I hope to see you there!
